color outside the lines.

As a child,
I colored inside the lines
and learned to perfect my cursive.
If I made one mistake on a sheet of loose leaf,
it was thrown out with the rest of my failed attempts at being good.
Now, I’ve learned to appreciate
the art extending beyond the canvas
and a blank piece of paper with no lines to confine me.
Standing up straight and staying inside the lines
never got us anywhere;
it’s the ones who dare to take the negative space
and create something new
that make this place truly alive.
