i watched from the shore
as waves crashed around you
and your hands shot out
of the water,
thrashing about
and i heard you call for help
in between the strength of the tide
pulling you under.
not quite within reach
but close enough for me to pull you out,
i stood as still as a statue
with the smallest of smiles
and arms crossed
as the water tickled my toes
and drew back.

many years ago,
i would have saved you.
this time,
you’re meant to drown
with all the other memories i carry
from a life i once knew,
letting the sea swallow you whole
for i’ve no place for old things
stained with the past.
rest assured, old spirit,
my new one will do better
as i watch the sea carry out the old
and rush the new ashore.
